SEDA College WA Hosts the 2024 SEDA Cup
Posted August 19, 2024 in SEDA Life
SEDA College WA has hosted an unforgettable 2024 SEDA Cup, with fierce competition and lasting friendships.
The annual interstate SEDA Cup sporting competition made its way to the wild west in 2024, with SEDA College WA proudly hosting over 1,000 students for three days of inclusive games and intense sporting action. Students from SEDA College Victoria, Northern Territory, South Australia, and Western Australia competed across five sports, all vying for the prestigious SEDA Cup.
The event kicked off at Bendat Basketball Stadium with an inspiring Opening Ceremony. Indigenous WA elder and former college board member Ingrid Cumming welcomed students, staff, and guests to this beautiful country. WA College Principal Rocky Collins followed with a powerful address, challenging everyone to build connections through the “power of sport.” AFL legend Nic Naitanui also made a special appearance, sharing his experiences and wisdom with our future sports stars.
After the formalities, the competition began with a focus on inclusivity. Our WA staff led 26 inclusion game stations, allowing students from all colleges to interact, have fun, and bond before the intense competition started. The day ended with a sausage sizzle, encouraging students to discuss the upcoming matches and make new friends.
Over the next two days, our WA students showcased their skills across five sports—AFL, AFL-W, football (soccer), basketball, netball, and cricket—at four fantastic venues. While the competition was fierce, the true highlight was the relationships built between students from different states, particularly the strong bond between our WA students and those from NT, with teammates showcasing the SEDA values from both states!
The race for the SEDA Cup was neck and neck, with College WA and College Victoria each claiming three championships. The final decider came down to the AFL Boys Grand Final between WA and Victoria. Despite WA leading by two points going into the final term, Victoria secured victory with three quick goals, ultimately taking home the SEDA Cup with four championships to WA’s three.
Final Winners of SEDA Cup 2024:
Victoria (4 Div 1 Championships)
- Basketball Girls
- Basketball Boys
- Football (Soccer) Boys
- AFL Boys
WA (3 Div 1 Championships)
- AFL-W
- Cricket
- Netball
SA (1 Div 1 Championship)

After a challenging 2023 SEDA Cup in Adelaide, where WA teams reached four Grand Finals but came up short, 2024 was a year of redemption. Our students and staff should be incredibly proud of their performances on the field and courts, representing SEDA College WA with great spirit. As hosts, they also showcased Perth and WA as a welcoming state and college.
Looking ahead to 2025, all eyes are on Darwin, Northern Territory, where the next SEDA Cup will be held. We’re excited about the opportunity to bring the cup back to WA and explore the top end of Australia, on Larrakia land.
