Empowering Futures: SEDA WA Workplace Learning Places Students in Industry

Workplace Learning at SEDA College WA is a cornerstone of SEDA’s hands-on teaching and learning philosophy.

SEDA provides real-life opportunities for students to gain experience throughout their placement, helping them develop an understanding of workplace duties and responsibilities. Students undertake opportunities within an industry of interest, allowing for real-life networking and exploration of potential career pathways while being mentored by industry professionals.

This year, SEDA has provided more opportunities to students through its Sporting, Community, and Network Partnerships, with almost 50 students across Year 11 and Year 12 engaging positively in these different roles with our partners.

There is a high demand for placements in the Education and Sport and Recreation industries, including Primary Schools, Early-Learning Centres, Sporting Clubs, Gyms, and Recreation and Fitness Centres, with over 300 students securing a placement in these industries.

Current Year 11 student Taj Beaton is at Swan Active in Beechboro. His supervisor, Ethan, has confirmed that due to his efforts throughout his work experience, Taj has been offered the casual role of Umpire/Coach at Swan Active Beechboro on Sundays. He is pictured above, presenting a certificate to one of his young students, Rex.

Ewan Allen, who graduated in 2023 from the Cricket Australia Sports Development Program, completed his work placement at Life Martial Arts. In this placement, he says, “I felt like one of the staff members.” He helped out in the gym and with lessons, in the café and in the office with administration.

Across the Year 12 cohort, there has been an increase in students exploring the Construction and Trade industry across several different trades, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry, concreting, welding, and bricklaying. In addition to the Construction and Trade Program students, SEDA currently has 45 students across its Sports Development Programs exploring potential career pathways in trades.

A number of students were fortunate enough to complete their work placement with one of SEDA’s elite sporting partners. At Perth Glory, workplace learning students volunteer on Game Days for the officiating of halftime junior games, accompanying mascots, and assisting in the running of pregame activities.

Other industries where students have secured placement opportunities include Allied Health Professionals (Physiotherapy), Retail, Hospitality, Animal Care & Services, Hair & Beauty, Community Services, and Administration & Management.

In addition to students engaged in the workforce, over 40 students are enrolled in SEDA’s University Enabling programs across Notre Dame (Perth) and Edith Cowan University (Bunbury), showing a real desire for students to explore the tertiary pathway prior to graduating from SEDA College.

It’s fantastic to see students choosing placements they are passionate about across many different industries. SEDA looks forward to continuing to grow its workplace learning space and walking side by side with students on their individual workplace learning journeys.

When it comes to school, most of us share a similar view of how things usually operate. Students attend a range of different classrooms to learn their subjects (be it maths, science, English, history, you name it), with different students and teachers for every subject.
