SEDA College WA Celebrates Harmony Day and Inclusive Spirit at Game On Sports Carnival

Posted April 24, 2024 in Wellbeing

Harmony Day

SEDA College WA proudly creates safe, inclusive environments where every person has an opportunity to experience growth. The College celebrated Harmony Day at their first Round of Game On, held on Friday 8 March 2024.

Game On is SEDA’s sports carnival that occurs once a term, and is a fantastic opportunity for students to come together and enjoy a friendly match in the sport they love. The students play in fixtured rounds throughout the course of the year, which eventually finals being held and one team crowned the winners of their sport’s tournament. The event champions connection and competitive spirit, but also provides an opportunity to bring awareness to a topic for the students to consider whilst they play.

Diversity of Australia

Harmony Week, typically celebrated in 2024 from Mon 18 March – Sunday 24 March, is a celebration of the diversity of Australia and a moment for all to reflect on inclusiveness and belonging.

“Over half of Australians were born overseas, or have at least one parent who was born overseas,” said Jugat Kaur for the Australian Governments’ What is Harmony Week piece.

Student Connect Team

To that end, the day started with a reflection from the Student Connect Team which focussed on sharing of each person’s personal history through a session called “Who’s your mob?”. Students and staff shared their story of their background, their culture and some of their customs.

The focus of the session was to demonstrate that we live in a multi-cultural society, where educating understanding and acceptance of rich diversity can only serve to enrich our lives. This time spent sharing provided students with the opportunity to recognise that we all come from different places and have different customs.

Putting this into practise was evident in the wonderful manner in which students interacted and engaged in the Game On Round that followed, embracing each other’s diversity to create an inclusive, engaging environment where happy, healthy people, thrive.
