2024 School Sport WA Highlights: Championship Wins and Unforgettable Moments
Posted October 30, 2024 in SEDA Life
School Sport unites our students and staff beyond the classroom, creating unforgettable experiences in a variety of competitions.
This year, we celebrated major wins in both girls’ soccer and AFL, with our senior girls’ teams showcasing their skills and resilience to bring home championship titles. These victories highlight the hard work, dedication, and passion of our students and coaches, setting the tone for another exciting season ahead.
The 2024 School Sport season began with our senior mixed cricket team competing in the WACA Graeme Wood Shield T20, a tournament we’ve dominated in recent years. After narrowly losing the grand final in 2023, the team was determined to go one better this year. With strong performances throughout the season, including a key win over cricket powerhouse Kent Street, the team unfortunately fell short in the knockout stages, losing to Newman College.
Next up, our senior basketball boys and girls hit the court with a packed home and away schedule. Hosting double headers at Warwick Basketball Stadium created an electric atmosphere, although our senior girls didn’t progress to the finals, and our senior boys narrowly missed out by a percentage of three. Coached by Anita Shipley and Carl Johnson, our basketball teams continue to make their mark in the SSWA Basketball Champion Schools competition.
In Term 2, our netballers took to the court for the SSWA Day Carnival, fielding two teams (Team A & Team B) in a full day of competition. Cheered on by fellow students and staff, Team A advanced to the Elimination Day Carnival, while Team B just missed out on progressing. Our all-boys team, made up of students from various sports classes and coached by Sally Brennan, impressed with their athleticism and enthusiasm but also fell short of advancing. Team A, led by coach Eleanor Collins and supported by Kara Malkovic, gave their all during the Elimination Day Carnival at Perth Netball Association, but despite some great matches, they were unable to make the finals. Well done to all three teams for their fighting spirit on the court.
Our senior football (soccer) teams also had an exciting season. The girls’ team topped their group and, after a dominant 3-0 victory over Lynwood SHS in the semi-final, made their third consecutive Grand Final appearance. In a thrilling match at Football West’s Sam Kerr Stadium, they secured their first-ever championship with a 1-0 win over John Curtin College, ending an 11-year reign. Congratulations to the girls and their coach, Joe Henderson! On the boys’ side, some thrilling matches, including a dramatic comeback against Emmanuel Christian College, saw them reach the quarter-finals, where they unfortunately lost in penalties to Lake Joondalup Baptist College. Well done to the boys and their coaches, Paul Steven and Matthew Wood!
In AFL, our boys’ and girls’ teams both had action-packed seasons. The boys advanced to the knockout stages but lost to a strong Court Grammar team after an impressive unbeaten run in the regular season. Huge congratulations to coach Simon Parry and the team for their hard work. The girls, meanwhile, were chasing their fourth consecutive AFL-W championship. Coached by AFL-W legend Kara Antonio, the team rose to the occasion, securing a stunning 29-6 victory over Comet Bay College at Optus Stadium in the curtain-raiser for the Fremantle Dockers vs. Melbourne game. Congratulations to the girls for becoming the most decorated AFL-W team in the SSWA competition!
Lastly, our surfing team competed in the SSWA and Surfing WA school competition in mid-August. Students from various sporting backgrounds showcased their surfing talents at Trigg Beach. This marked our third year competing, and it’s been our most impressive yet. Special congratulations go to Logan Bassett (PGWPA12) and Ethan Budd-Christie (BWAWAR12) for reaching the Semi-Finals. Even though they didn’t make the final, their progress from last year is incredible. Levi Nattalotto (FDSUBI12) and Evan Martucci (BWAWAR11) also did a fantastic job, narrowly missing out on the next heat. Finally, a special commendation goes to Brent Snook, PE HoLA Simon Parry, HOSS Matt Wood and Principal Rocky Collins for their support on the day.
Whether it’s on the court, field, or in the ocean, our students have demonstrated incredible resilience, teamwork, and sportsmanship across all sports. We’re proud of their achievements and look forward to more exciting competitions ahead!
