Through our valued partnership with the Subiaco Football Club, Year 12 students Jayden Oliver and Lacey McKay were invited to participate in a Community Engagement Week program in Leonora. The initiative, supported by Genesis Minerals, brought together football, education and community development, with a focus on creating positive experiences for young people in the region.

Jayden and Lacey were selected following recommendations from staff, including Head of Senior School Brent Snook, in recognition of their outstanding engagement, leadership and contribution to our school community.

During their time in Leonora, the students worked alongside Subiaco Football Club representatives to help deliver football clinics for local primary and secondary students. Across two days, they assisted with skill development activities, games, coaching sessions and umpiring, while helping to create an inclusive and engaging environment for participating students.

The program included a range of football-based activities, from skill drills and fun training exercises through to structured games and match play. However, some of the most meaningful moments occurred outside the formal sessions. At the conclusion of each school day, many local students chose to remain and spend additional time with the visitors, enjoying informal games, kicking the football and building friendships.

Mohamed Yosuf, the Principal of Leonora District High School, was glowing in his feedback for our students, commenting:

“The students from SEDA College WA were exceptional throughout their time in Leonora. Their ability to engage students of all ages and abilities was outstanding, creating learning opportunities that were both meaningful and fun. They demonstrated maturity, leadership, and a genuine commitment to our community, leaving a lasting positive impact on our students and staff.”

A highlight of the visit for the school and community was the involvement of Kieren Douglas, current First Nations Subiaco Football Club League Player and former Leonora District High student. Returning to his hometown to support the clinics, Kieran served as an inspiring role model for local students, demonstrating the possibilities that can emerge through hard work, commitment and community support.

The experience provided Jayden and Lacey with the opportunity to develop their confidence, leadership and communication skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for the importance of giving back to the community.

Reflecting on the experience, Jayden said,

“It was a great experience the school made us feel incredibly welcome and included, like I had been there for years. Everyone was friendly and involved in the activities we ran but also made us feel included in their own activities.”

Feedback from Subiaco Football Club was overwhelmingly positive, with CEO Kellie Properjohn praising the contribution made by both students throughout the visit.

“Their enthusiasm, maturity and genuine commitment to supporting the community program made a lasting impression on everyone involved,” Ms Properjohn said.

“Jayden and Lacey represented both themselves and SEDA College WA exceptionally well, demonstrating professionalism, adaptability and a willingness to go above and beyond throughout the program.”

Head of Senior School Ben Lillis said the experience reflected the strength of the College’s partnerships and the opportunities they create for students.

“Our partnership with the Subiaco Football Club continues to provide outstanding opportunities for our students to engage beyond the classroom and contribute meaningfully to the wider community. Experiences like the Leonora trip not only strengthen the connection between our organisations, but also allow students to develop leadership skills, build relationships and understand the importance of giving back. We are incredibly proud of the way Jayden and Lacey represented the College throughout the program.”

Ben also added:

“The partnership between Subiaco Football Club and SEDA College WA is a fantastic example of education and industry working together. Students are provided with exceptional opportunities to gain hands-on experience within the Sport and Recreation industry while building meaningful connections with the broader community. Through these experiences, they are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, develop confidence and new skills, and are supported every step of the way.”
