What is the SEDA Difference? How Industry Partnerships Shape the Way Students Learn
Posted October 22, 2026 in SEDA Life
For many Year 10 students, the question of what comes next feels big. Do you stay on the familiar path, or do you look for a senior school experience that connects what you love with where you want to go? At SEDA College WA, the answer starts with one simple idea: students learn best when their education is connected to real industry.
That connection is what we call the SEDA Difference. Here is what it looks like in practice, and why it matters for the way our students learn.
A Different Kind of Senior School
SEDA College WA is an Independent Secondary School and a provider of the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). Students complete their Years 11 and 12 through an individual approach to learning that gives them the chance to develop real skills for a successful future.
What sets SEDA apart is how that learning is designed. Rather than building a curriculum in isolation, we develop our Areas of Study together with our industry partners. The goal is for students to build the knowledge, skills and attributes that current industry professionals actually use. You can read more about this approach on our Student Life.
Partnering With Some of WA’s Biggest Names
SEDA College WA works alongside several of Western Australia’s leading sporting and construction organisations. Our program partners include the West Coast Eagles, Fremantle Dockers, Basketball WA, Perth Wildcats, Netball WA, West Coast Fever, Perth Glory, Football West, Perth Scorchers, RugbyWA, Western Force, Perth Lynx and Midland Brick.
These are not logos on a wall. Each partner plays a role in shaping what students learn and the experiences they have along the way. Through our Sports Development Programs, students can build their education around a sport they are passionate about, while the Construction and Trade Program connects students with the building and trade industry.
What Industry Partnership Looks Like Day to Day
The best way to understand the SEDA Difference is to look at what students actually do.
Inside a Sports Development Program
Take the West Coast Eagles AFL Sports Development Program as an example. Students work towards a Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation alongside General level WACE courses in Physical Education, English, and Careers and Employability. They also complete First Aid, CPR, and coaching and officiating accreditation.
The Areas of Study are built around real roles in the sport industry. In “The Official”, students learn what it takes to officiate at a grassroots level. In “The Community Sports Coach”, they explore the responsibilities of an entry-level coach and refine their skills through practice and feedback. In “The Dream Team”, they design their own sports team and finish with a team launch and mock press conference.
Then there are the opportunities that only an industry partner can offer. For example, our West Coast Eagles students can complete work placements with the club, work in fan activation and community development at home games, coach and officiate at Naitanui Cup Carnivals, tour Mineral Resources Park, and deliver primary school clinics on behalf of the club. They also hear from West Coast Eagles guest speakers on topics that link directly to their Areas of Study.
For students in the South West, this program is also available through our Bunbury MultiSport campus.
Inside the Construction and Trade Program
The Construction and Trade Program was designed for students who want the practical skills and knowledge needed to obtain an apprenticeship in the building and trade industry. Midland Brick partners with SEDA to deliver the program, giving students real life learning experiences across a wide range of trades, along with potential work placements. This variety helps students work out which trades interest them most.
In Year 11, students spend one day per week with Skill Hire in Forrestfield, completing theory and practical training towards their Certificate II in Construction Pathways. They also gain their White Card and Senior First Aid. In Year 12, students focus on the trade they are most passionate about, with support to pursue options such as a school based apprenticeship or traineeship, TAFE courses and micro-credentials, depending on availability.
Hands-on learning runs right through the program. Students build a small mock apartment in the CTP Hazlemere workshops, design and construct sustainable structures for community members in need, and plan a community camp where they deliver a real construction project with a local not-for-profit organisation. Our community partner Milwaukee gives students access to world leading tools and essential safety resources along the way.
SEDA has also launched a Women in Construction Scholarship, supported by NAWIC WA. It provides a $5,000 annual contribution, industry placements guided by female supervisors, and access to mentoring and networking events for emerging women in construction. You can find more about this and other opportunities on our Scholarships.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
At SEDA, learning is not limited to a classroom. It happens in genuine workplace and community settings, in collaboration with teachers and industry professionals.
Our community partners help make this possible. Clubs and venues such as East Perth FC, South Fremantle FC, Subiaco FC, Perth Netball Association and Southwest Sports Centre provide campus facilities for everyday learning and offer workplace learning opportunities. The Perth Redbacks and Warwick Senators give students the chance to volunteer and complete workplace learning at NBL1 games, as well as gain Aussie Hoops coaching qualifications. Volleyball WA offers workplace learning and volunteering at state and national events, and Venues West hosts major school sporting, academic and career events while offering unique industry experiences.
Students may step outside their comfort zone and make mistakes in these settings. That is where the real learning takes place, and our teachers support them every step of the way.
Why This Approach Works
Industry partnerships only make a difference when students are supported to make the most of them. That is why SEDA uses a “one teacher to one class” approach. It allows teachers to take on a true mentoring role, getting to know each student and their individual goals.
Because of our connection to industry, we also know the personal qualities and transferable skills that employers look for. We place as much importance on developing these skills as on academic progress. Through a tailored approach known as MyPlan, each student’s teacher helps them build these skills and set a clear pathway towards their future.
Where the SEDA Difference Leads
The real measure of any approach is where it takes students. SEDA graduates go on to study and work across a broad range of industries, including sport and recreation, sport management, building, construction and trade, education, event management, community development, healthcare and more.
Further education pathways are supported through partners including Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, The University of Notre Dame Australia, Skill Hire and iVET. Graduates can also continue their studies through a Dual Diploma program with SEDA Group (RTO 22503).
