A Year of Firsts and Finals in School Sport WA

Posted November 2, 2026 in SEDA Life

It’s been a big year for our students on the School Sport WA stage. From the pool in March to the athletics track in October, they have represented SEDA College WA with plenty of effort and heart. Here’s how the year unfolded.

Swimming

Our year began on Wednesday 4 March, when our interschool swim team competed at School Sport WA’s Division 4 carnival at the Perth High Performance outdoor pool. The ten swimmers were only eligible for the Year 11 and 12 events, and they represented the College well. Led on the day by teachers Simon Parry, Brent Snook and Matthew Wood, it was our strongest swim team yet.

Cricket

Two weeks later, our mixed cricket team earned a place in the Graeme Wood Shield semi-final, played against Leeming Senior High School on 18 March. After bowling first, the team faced a late surge of runs from Leeming in the final few overs, and Leeming SHS went on to the 2026 final. However, reaching the semi-final was a strong result for the squad. The team was coached by Jacob Coniglio.

Futsal

March was a busy month for our futsal teams, with both the girls and the boys playing in the North Day Carnival over two days at Kingsway Indoor Complex. The boys, led by Shannon Beniston, brought plenty of effort to the carnival but ultimately were knocked out of the running. The girls, coached by Braydon Beckley, qualified for the State Futsal Championships on 22 March and came away with the silver medal after a 5-3 final against a strong St Andrew’s side from Dianella. It’s only the second time in many years that our senior girls have made it from the North Day Carnival to State Championship Day, which makes this a standout result.

Cross Country

On Thursday 21 May, seven Year 11 and 12 students travelled to Yokine Open Space for the School Sport WA Interschool Cross Country. They ran in the Open 16 Years+ events against more than 200 runners in each race. Some highlights were Year 12 student Abby Blizzard (Perth Glory) finishing in the top 50 with a time of 19:18, followed closely by Year 11 student Sienna Moodley, who came 47th in 19:57. On the boys’ side, Year 11 Basketball student Reuben Moseley finished in the top 40 with a time of 24:57, and RugbyWA student Shane Clarke (Year 11) came 48th in 25:35. Our Basketball WA Warwick Year 11 class also supported the event, marshalling the course and keeping all runners safe.

Girls Basketball

Our girls basketball team finished in the top 4, before their season came to an end against Willetton in the semi-final in June. Just as important as the results was the strong team environment they built, with great connections developing between the Year 11 and Year 12 students. Captain Addison Barnes and vice-captain Maria Angok provided strong leadership throughout the season, while Luca Kuhn was a consistent defensive presence and worked hard to support the team on court. It was a strong campaign built on teamwork, leadership and connection.

Boys Basketball

The boy’s basketball team also finished in the Top 4 when the School Sport WA competition wrapped up in June. Hunter Mettam was a standout, leading the team with his dynamic scoring and producing a big performance in the semi-final against Willetton that nearly carried the boys to victory. Ethan Powell anchored the defence and played an important role throughout the season, while Ethan Jongsma and Levi Grida were consistently reliable, taking on whatever role the team needed. That consistency continued at the SEDA Cup, where they again demonstrated the values and team-first approach they had shown throughout the SSWA season.

Rugby Boys and Girls

On 24 June, our rugby teams made their debut in the Western Force Cup, and our boys made it a memorable one by ending Aranmore Catholic College’s eight-year streak. It was a fantastic start to this prestigious competition. The girls joined forces with Lakeland Senior High School to form a team to play Aranmore’s girls. The result didn’t go their way, but it was a great round-robin tournament and a promising first step for the program. Our teams were coached by Rhys King and Daniel O’Herlihy. AFL-M

Our boys’ AFL team finished 3rd in the competition, which wrapped up at the end of Term 2. It was a talented group that played some excellent football and learnt plenty from a tough semi-final about what it takes to win the big games. Captain Benji showed strong leadership, played at a high standard and was named our MVP.

AFL-W

On 26 July, our Senior Girls AFL-W team wrapped up their 2026 campaign at the School Sport WA Dockers Cup Grand Final, and they once again finished it with the title. Led by coach Kara Antonio, the girls took home our fifth Dockers Cup championship. It’s a historic result that draws the College level with Kelmscott Senior High School for the most Dockers Cup championships by any school in the competition’s history.

Girls Netball

Netball took over in mid-August, when both our Year 11 and Year 12 girls’ teams progressed to the Zone Finals at the Elimination Carnival. The Year 12s worked together all day to reach a very close final against Belridge SHS, showing resilience, determination and teamwork in challenging, rainy conditions. The Year 11s were playing together for the first time, and they gelled quickly, showed great sportsmanship and kept encouraging each other throughout. Although they fell just short of the final competition, they have built a strong foundation heading into the National College Cup.

Boys Netball

Our boys finished 3rd in WA at the netball carnival in mid-August, making Finals Day for the first time. It’s our best ever result at the carnival, and every member of the team stepped up to make it happen. Blayz and Hudson were among our best, and Jayden Oliver earned a special mention for his effort on the court. The boys built a supportive and fun team environment where they celebrated each other’s success, and we’re looking forward to seeing how far they can go next year.

Surfing

Levi Downs and Benji Lechte-Hynam represented the College at the School Sport WA surfing event at Trigg Beach in August. Their day ended in the opening round, but it was a great opportunity to compete against surfers from other schools and gain valuable experience.

Girls Football

On Monday 14 September, our Senior Girls Football team took the field against John Curtin College in the School Sport WA Champion Schools Grand Final at the Sam Kerr Football Centre. It was the girls’ fourth Grand Final appearance in five years, a sign of how far our football program has come at the highest level of SSWA competition. John Curtin won the day 5-0, but our girls showed resilience and created several good passages of play. They were gracious and respectful towards the winners, in line with our G.R.E.A.T values. The team was coached by Braydon Beckley, with Joe Henderson as assistant coach.

Boys Football

Just days later, our Senior Boys Football team made history, playing in the first Grand Final in the program’s history to cap off a remarkable season. On 17 September at the Sam Kerr Football Centre, they met John Curtin College of the Arts in the SSWA Grand Final, going down 13-1. Reaching the Grand Final was a tremendous achievement, and the boys represented themselves in a way that made us proud at SEDA. The team was coached by Paul Steven.

Athletics

Our year finished on the track, with our Year 11 and 12 students making their debut at the SSWA Interschool Athletics Carnival at the State Athletics Stadium on Friday 16 October. Despite being a relatively small team, they delivered an exceptional performance across track and field, with multiple 1st place results and a number of 2nd and 3rd place finishes. Gold was our most common result, helping SEDA College WA finish 7th overall. Both our 4 x 100m relay teams won gold by comfortable margins to close out the day. Abrahim Fofana was named Champion Senior Boy after an outstanding day across both track and field events.

We are incredibly proud of every student who represented SEDA College WA this year, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve in 2027.
