SEDA Success Stories: How Alumni Scott Hollins Turned Passion into a Career

Posted October 2, 2024 in SEDA Success Stories

Welcome to our brand-new blog series, SEDA Success Stories, where we reconnect with our alumni to explore the paths they’ve taken since graduating from SEDA College WA.

In each post, we’ll interview alumni on their professional journeys, the impact SEDA had on their development, and their advice for current students.

Our first alumni spotlight shines on Scott Hollins, a Class of 2021 graduate who transitioned from SEDA to a thriving career in rugby development. Scott’s journey from a student with a passion for sport to his current role as Development Officer for RugbyWA highlights how SEDA provided him with the skills and experience to excel in the professional sports industry.

What is your name, and what SEDA Program did you graduate from?

Scott Hollins, Fremantle Dockers Class of 2021

What inspired you to come to SEDA College?

I chose to come to SEDA for year 12 because I was interested in progressing my skills in coaching/ delivering and understanding how the professional sport industry works. I also wanted to challenge myself as a rugby player by trying my hand at learning football.

Can you share a memorable moment or highlight from your time at SEDA College?

A highlight from my time at SEDA would have to be organising Survivor Games for the Fremantle Dockers Year 11 class to participate in.

Tell us a little about your career path upon graduating SEDA.

After graduating from SEDA, I started working for Touch Football WA as a Field Officer and worked for the company on a casual basis for 2 years. I earned this position through my experience as a referee and officiating all over the country for local, domestic and international competitions. While working for Touch WA, I started a job at RugbyWA as a Casual Development Officer where I eventually earned a promotion to step into my current role as Development Officer – Club Programs. My main role is to deliver programs to clubs and to introduce our new non-contact initiative Tri Tag Rugby to the general public.

How did your experience at SEDA College prepare you for your current career?

My experience at SEDA has given me experience in coaching/ delivering, event organisation and some knowledge around the logistics of preparing carnivals and gala days. These skills have helped me prepare for my role in organising our club programs.

What advice would you give to current students who are looking to follow in your footsteps?

Give everything a go. Experience is never a bad thing and whether it is a positive or negative experience, you will grow as a person.

Looking back, how has your education at SEDA College shaped who you are today?

My education at SEDA has definitely helped me gain a career in the sport and recreation industry, not only in the qualifications that I gained but also to learn life skills such as resilience, leadership and having an open mind to different scenarios that may come my way.

A huge thank you to Scott Hollins for sharing his journey with us and offering such valuable insights! It’s inspiring to see how far Scott has come since his time at SEDA, and we wish him continued success in his career.
